New-media artist Matt Kenyon is cofounder of SWAMP (Studies of Work Atmosphere and Mass Production), which takes a critical look at the effects of global corporate operations, mass media and military-industrial complexes.
Consumer Index looks at the system put up by one of the information giants, AC Nielsen, which equips consumers with a device that scans everything they buy. This data, as well as gender, race and social class, is then sold to businesses at a very high markup. Here Kenyon merges the infrared head of the device with a micro-camera that he places in his mouth and goes into the aisles of a Walmart store, thus metaphorically swallowing the goods while sabotaging the control system.
