NELSON SULLIVAN_SELF FISHEYE

An emblematic and inescapable figure of self-filming, Nelson Sullivan has given us a surprising film diary through over 600 videos. Recorded by a handheld camera between 1982 and 1989, these moments selected from Sullivan’s daily life furtively reveal a tender, often humorous, and occasionally ironic portrait of an entire generation connected with the underground gay milieu in Greenwich Village and the Lower East Side of New York. In Sullivan’s work, the lens becomes both a subjective eye focused on the artist and what he is experiencing, and, without dissociating the two, a mirror in which the whole extravagant bohemian crowd gravitating around him loves to show off. This generates a subtle game between being and appearing.
