A major figure on the electronic arts scene, Lozano-Hemmer creates interactive installations at the intersection of urbanism, architecture, and performance. His interactive platforms subvert technologies such as robotics, surveillance devices, and networking systems.
In Surface Tension, a giant Orwellian eye follows visitors as they move around the exhibition space. The work was inspired by Georges Bataille’s text L’Anus solaire, which the artist read during the Gulf War, the first campaign in which intensive use was made of smart bombs remotely controlled by camera. The significance of the piece has been dramatically updated by the digital surveillance techniques used by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security under the Patriot Act.
